Xclusive Can Limited industrial tour report

Industrial Tour Report: Xclusive Can Limited Visit*

Level 2 Semester 1 Food Packaging Practical Course - B.Sc. in Food Engineering (Session 2020-21)

Introduction:

In pursuit of enhancing practical knowledge, students of the Level 2 Semester 1 Food Packaging Practical Course, B.Sc. in Food Engineering (Session 2020-21), embarked on an insightful industrial tour. The tour was guided by Dr. Afzal Rahman, the department head, and Professor Mrs. Dr. Poly Karmokar, our esteemed course teacher. The destination was Xclusive Can Limited, where students were introduced to the realm of food packaging production.

Guidelines and Safety:

Upon arrival at Xclusive Can Limited, we were provided with essential safety guidelines to ensure a secure and productive tour experience.

Tour Highlights:

1. Workshop 1: Students observed the production of key components such as ringt leads, coil stand making machines, and die of hand bleeders from tin sheets.

2. Workshop 2: The group witnessed various machining processes, including latch machines, shaper machines, vertical milling machines, grill milling machines, surface grinder machines, wet coat machines, wear coat machines, CNC machines, EDF machines, square shape machines, and electric discharge machines. The use of cutting oil, welding machines, and other equipment was demonstrated.

3. Assembly Section: Students observed the assembly of packaging materials using both manpower and machines. The testing for leaks was an integral part of this stage.

Packaging Material Production:

Different floors of the building showcased the manufacturing of packaging materials, including ice cream boxes for popular companies such as Polar and Unilever. These materials are crafted using virgin P and PP chemicals.

Laboratory Visit:

The tour concluded with a visit to the laboratory, where students observed equipment such as NDJ5s Viscometers, digital calipers, gloss meters, electric ovens, Precisa weight machines, heat seal testers, fridges, vacuum leakage testing machines, and metal flow index testers. These instruments play a vital role in testing and ensuring the quality of the produced materials.

This industrial tour provided an invaluable opportunity for students to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications. The insights gained from observing the various stages of food packaging production and quality testing processes will undoubtedly enhance our understanding of food engineering and packaging principles. We extend our gratitude to Dr. Afzal Rahman, Professor Mrs. Dr. Poly Karmokar, and Xclusive Can Limited for facilitating this enriching experience.

Introduction

We, the students of B.Sc in Food Engineering session 2020-21, visited Xclusive Can Limited on August 30, 2023 as part of our Food Packaging practical course. Our department head Dr. Afzal Rahman and our course teacher Mrs. Dr. Poly Karmokar accompanied us and guided us throughout the tour. Xclusive Can Limited is a leading manufacturer of food packaging materials in Bangladesh, producing various types of cans, boxes, and containers for ice cream, dairy, and other food products.

Safety Guidelines

After reaching the factory, we were given some initial safety guidelines by the employees. They told us to wear protective gloves, masks, and goggles while visiting the production areas. They also instructed us to avoid touching any machinery or equipment without permission and to follow the signs and directions carefully.

Production Areas

We visited different parts of the factory where we saw how food packaging materials are made from raw materials to finished products. The main parts we visited were:

  • Workshop 1: Here we saw how ringt lead, coil stand, and hand bleeder die are made from tin sheet using machines like cutting machine, bending machine, punching machine, and welding machine.
  • Workshop 2: Here we saw how latch machine, shaper machine, vertical milling machine, grill milling machine, surface grinder machine, wet coat machine, wear coat machine, CNC machine, EDF machine, square shape machine, and electric discharge machine are used to make various shapes and sizes of cans and boxes. We also learned that cutting oil is used in these machines to reduce friction and heat.
  • Assembly: Here we saw how all the packaging materials are assembled together with the help of manpower and machines. We also saw how they check for any leaks or defects using vacuum leakage testing machine and other quality control tools.
  • Floors: Here we saw how ice cream boxes of popular companies like Polar and Unilever are made from virgin P and PP chemicals using machines like injection molding machine, extrusion machine, thermoforming machine, and printing machine.

Lab

At last we visited the lab where we saw many equipment for testing the physical and chemical properties of the packaging materials. Some of the equipment we saw were NDJ5s viscometer, digital caliper, gloss meter, electric oven, precisa weight machine, heat seal tester, fridge, metal flow index tester.

Conclusion

The industrial tour was a very informative and enjoyable experience for us. We learned a lot about the food packaging industry and its processes. We also got to see the practical applications of our theoretical knowledge. We thank our department head Dr. Afzal Rahman and our course teacher Mrs. Dr. Poly Karmokar for arranging this tour for us. We also thank Xclusive Can Limited for their hospitality and cooperation.
